Chairman's Newsletter No. 20

Dear Members,
Well here it is the last of my newsletters for 2009, seems like it was just a few days ago we were starting the season.
Last nights pyramid competition produced some surprise entries from previously unseen authors and how nice it was to see them. Jack and Liz managed to keep us entertained, finding some, at times, obscure matching points in both images!!
At one point there were two images with the same number of votes that totalled 2 more than the entire attendance! However well done to new member Roy Brophy who managed to keep Sheila Read in second place, his monochrome image of reflected trees from the New Forest looked good which ever way Jack managed to present it!

Chairman's evening 5th Jan 2010. My guest speaker is Steve Rogers, Project director to The Wargraves Photographic Project. Steve's presentation/lecture is in great demand all over the country with groups of genealogist and other like minded people however he has offered to find out any information/photos for our members. So if you have a particular member of your family who may have died in combat since 1914 or may be a blank in your family history tree please email direct to steve@twgpp.org.uk using the term 'viewfinders request' in the subject box Steve will do his best for you. Steve has access to records that you would normally get charged for so this is an offer not to be missed. You should give Steve as much info as you can about the family member a minimum I suggest is the surname and initials, if possible any known dates/regiments/service/rank etc.
If you want to look at it the website is www.twgpp.org.uk

Holiday project, during this time look forward to next year and think about taking that photo that could be used as the clubs Christmas card for 2010 !

So it just remains for me to say whatever you are doing over the Christmas period have a wonderful time, enjoy the family and friends and look forward to a successful 2010.

To Stan Stubbs, Ray Kemmish and Sheila Budden all recovering from operations/hospital care, a continued speedy recovery and we hope to see you ASAP in the new year.
To Jo and David Horscroft in New Zealand, have a good one!

Take care now and keep snapping!

Chairman's Newsletter No. 19

Dear Member,
I hope you are not too upset if all of your images were not shown at Tuesdays assessment. With well over 100 images submitted we had to make a decision of where to make the cut off. As you may well be aware we attempt to keep the number of images to be assessed to around the 70 mark in order to allow the judge sufficient time to give each image their best critique.

Barbara Holder made an excellent job of sorting out the best points and gave some constructive remarks that we can all learn from.

Congratulations to all of you who scored well and in particular to George Marsh on his elevation to the advanced class in the digital section, a place we all know he belongs. Again I would like to thank Jill and Mark for the smooth operation we had on Tuesday. Jill had to make a choice on which images we allowed using her knowledge and the position held by each entrant as the main criteria. Now the question arises of how do we handle this sort of problem should it arise again. We have to ask you to nominate your choice of priority when entering both prints and PDIs. Would you please number your images in your preferred priority, there is still a maximum of 4 images in each section so if you prefer your prints to have priority then number them 1 - 4 and your PDIs 5 - 8 or vice versa. The internal competition secretary will still determine how many images will be shown while attempting to balance the two sections.

Next week, One question has been raised about next weeks pyramid competition, as it is a friendly your images will still be accepted into future assessments/competitions. So please bring along any mounted (preferred) prints for this fun evening. There is a surprise for the two last prints left standing.

Reminder. Bring some finger food for the social last hour; not too many sausage rolls eh!

Hope to see you all on Tuesday

Lovely frosty/foggy weather forecast for this weekend, happy snapping

Chairman' Newletter No. 18

Dear Members,

Roy and Sue Fisher gave an interesting lecture about their love for their bicycles, they covered so much of the world in the saddle I felt quite saddle sore!

Next year they are riding from the Baltic to the Adriatic, looks like another lecture soon then!

Next week we have the last assessment for this year with Barbara Holder judging, please ensure your entry is sent in before midnight Friday.

Keith Bamber has agreed to organise the Christmas card table for the next two weeks.

Dec 15th is our last get together before our Christmas break, Jack and Liz will be running a pyramid fun competition for the first part of the evening, until about 9pm and then we can have a nice long tea/coffee break and if you wish to please bring along a few nibbles, just enough for two people only please.(Yes thats you and me!) No need for me to say anything about sausage rolls eh!

Basingstoke Camera Club Annual Projected Image Exhibition 2010

Basingstoke Camera Club Annual Projected Image Exhibition 2010 - Closing date 14 January 2010!

The Exhibition has the same format as last year, in that we're accepting digital images only. However, as before, there's no requirement that a photograph was taken with a digital camera - it could have been taken with a film camera and scanned, for example.

As for the 2009 exhibition, there are four classes you can enter - Open, Nature, Portrait and Monochrome. Please refer to the terms and conditions for the specific entry requirements for each class.

You can enter your digital images either: a) by using our exhibition online entry submission website (the preferred option), b) by email, or c) by post on CD or DVD. No matter how you choose to submit your images, you can either pay by cheque or postal order, or by using Paypal. Please note that you don't need to have or to open a Paypal account - you can simply use the Paypal service to pay by credit or debit card.

Entries received via either email or post require significantly more work to process than those received via the exhibition website. To encourage use of the latter, we’ve introduced entry fee surcharges as follows: Images sent by email: surcharge 1 pound; images sent by post: surcharge 2 pound. If you’re concerned about making payment over the internet, you can enter your images using the exhibition website and send payment separately by post, without incurring a surcharge.

Some people seem to encounter difficulties naming their images correctly when sending them via email or post. If you use the exhibition website, you do not have to worry about image naming and you will receive an email acknowledging receipt of your entry, containing thumbnails of all the images you entered.

See our exhibition website: www.photoexhib.co.uk/bcc, where you can either register for the exhibition or obtain an entry form. You can also find the accepted and award winning images from the 2009 exhibition at that web address.

If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to call me on 01256-764339, or email me at exhib2010@basingstokecameraclub.co.uk.

I very much look forward to receiving your entry.
Yours sincerely,
Steve Bright ARPS

Chairman's Newsletter No.17

Dear Members,
Tuesday nights judge Alan Cooke said "Finding a winner is not going to be easy" unquote. How very glad I was to hear him say that and you should be as well. The 31 entries for the Digital Panel Trophy meant he had to review 155 images, its true that some were repeats but he still managed to find something to say about every one, an outstanding piece of top class judging. Well done to Jillian for the winning panel, and well done to all the authors who did break away from the normal format and created something different. Pushing back the traditional boundaries and using the software how it is meant to be. One member however has learnt a hard lesson, read the competition rules {Click Here} or more precisely stick to them. No real harm done on the night but a superb piece of work passed over.

Several members made some constructive suggestions on the night, I'm sorry but I cannot remember all of them, however we would like your feed back about the competition ASAP. With the growth in our active members it is not hard to see that next year we may well be over subscribed for this comp, so please let Malcolm have your ideas, do we need the 1st image? could we get by just showing one image?

Can we simplify the rules? If so how? Your suggestions will be appreciated/debated.

Next Tuesday we have Roy Fisher's lecture I'm sure it will be interesting and there is sure to be some great images.

Christmas Cards. As usual we will have a table organised to put your Christmas cards on, this will be available on 8th & 15th Dec.

Photo opportunity, The Winter Christmas market is opening on Sunday in Winchester and all over the country towns and villages will be switching on their Christmas decorations/lights.

My regards and keep snapping!

Chairman's News No. 16

Dear Members,

GOOD news? BAD news time.

Friday 13th. The friendly AV night at Basingstoke was not so good for the club. On one of the worst weather days of the winter 10 of us and 2 ex members we almost out numbered the combined home and Woodley CC attendance!

Ian Bigg was the judge for the night and his vast experience showed with his critique and scoring. Woodley CC from Reading were the winners with 89 points then North Hants PS with 87 and we managed to crawl in 82 points.

So on reflection we were on average one point adrift on each of our AVs, not that far behind. The theme Ian was looking for was a story line and those AVs scored better.

Monday 16th. At the SPF reps meeting it was announced that starting next year they would be running an annual print competition, details will be published soon.

Tuesday 17th. A mixture of news from the fund raising evening, Stan Roberts gave an entertaining show which appeared to be much appreciated by those attending, while the number of visitors were on par the membership was poorly represented. This may have been that we saw the show a few years ago however the numbers is disappointing.

The raffle was well supported with some 25 prizes, my thanks to all of you who gave items. Jean and Janet did a great job selling tickets and my thanks to them, sorry I was remiss in not thanking them on the evening.

Wednesday 18th. Received news that Liz Whitemore had taken a bad fall and spent all day in A & E, Jack assured me that it was not the lack of water in her drinks but a pure accident, latest news is good though and we wish her a speedy recovery.

Thursday 19th. Over to Colbury memorial hall for the first round of this seasons league matches. George Atkins gave me a concern with his late arrival, he had the prints, it's them SatNavs you know. However, a very good evening with Glyn Edmonds in the judges hot seat resulted in winning both the prints and the PDIs sections. The results sheet is attached however well done to Peter Read and Roy Lambeth for their 10's.

Diary/program change. April 8th 2010 ( Thursday) we have accepted an invitation from New Forest CC to take part in a friendly competition at their venue. This is a return fixture as we had them over last year for a similar evening. We have agreed that we will have 12 prints and 12 PDIs and they have already asked Leo Rich to judge, so we should have a fun evening.

Next week, we have, I'm told 31 entries for the Digital Panel Trophy. So Alan Cooke will be busy and we need to get started on time.
Hope to see you then
Regards & keep snapping

Chairman's Newsletter No. 15

Dear Members,

What an avalanche of tens we got last night from Keven Sandall, having discussed his method of marking prior to the assessments I had expected a few more than normal. Keven explained that the reason he went forward to be a judge was quote " I was fed up with Judges picking one or two best images for a score of ten and then awarding everything else under 10" unquote.  However not withstanding that I simply cannot name everyone with a maximum last night my memory and space being limited!,  suffice to say congratulations to Lynn Lambeth and Pat Ball for making the scores they needed to move into the 'advance' class in PDIs.

FRIDAY  13th.  We will be taking part in the 'friendly' AV competition at the North Hants CC, I am attaching details of their location and directions, you will be more than welcome to come along for the 8pm start.

TUESDAY 17th   Is the clubs 'hall fund raising' event with Stan Roberts and his magic lantern show, Please bring anything suitable for the raffle prizes, where Janet (my wife) will be assisting Jean to sell tickets.

TUESDAY 17th  Do not forget to hand in to Malcolm your CD disc or memory stick with your entries for the 'digital panel competition'.  I will attach the revised rules and a copy of the entry form.

Thursday 19th,  Our first round in this years SPF league matches,  we are away to the New Forest club with Winchester PS being the other opponents. Again you will be welcome to attend at Colbury village hall.

Finally a thank you to Jillian for the efficient running of last nights assessment and to Mark for his perseverance in getting the PDIs to run, it is not easy when 40 people are looking on which is why we asked for volunteers some time ago to help out, application on a ten pound note to Jillian please!

My regards and keep snapping.

Chairman's Newsletter No. 14

Dear Members,
Well done to all the members who braved the tornado conditions on Tuesday to see Leo's slides and listen to his tales of how he came to take them and he kept us entertained in his usual manner.

One small but significant point he made, was showing the difference from a straight film slide to a slide made from the digital image. It really shows how much farther the digital needs to go to get on a par with film, yes I know you anoraks have been telling us this for some time!

Many thanks to those who have volunteered to help out, John will be contacting you soon.

Last call for the print boxes, we have a call on all of them if nobody else wants any! They will go next Tuesday.

Next week is an assessment with judge Keven Sandall, so make certain your entry is in by midnight Friday.

Have a safe bonfire night and rememberance parade.

Lest we Forget

Chairman's Newsletter No. 13

Dear Member,
With just 12 entries for the Print Panel Trophy our judge Barry Day was expecting an easy ride. Barry spent time previewing the prints and them stated that "it will not be easy picking a winner tonight".
The entry may have been disappointingly small but it was certainly of a good standard. Well done to Roy Lambeth taking the gold with his panel 'a Different Life' Silver went to Lynn Lambeth's images of a Mosque in Morocco and John May's Butterflies and Moths took the bronze.

Print Boxes.  Your committee need to dispose of 28 wooden print boxes in order to make space and reduce the combustible material in the loft. These boxes could be used to store your old mounted prints, those that you simply cannot tear yourself to dispose off. Please make contact with John Walter if you would like some or all of them.

Discussion on advancement.  As there was plenty of time after the panel competition we took the opportunity to have a general discussion on the concerns raised about the clubs PDI assessments. The committee had spent some time talking about it and produced a proposal. During the discussion points were made about how the club has reached our current position, the standard of the entries, reasons behind the proposal and every member present given the chance to air their view. It May have seemed to be a fragmented committee unable to agree but that is not the case, it's democracy at work. In the end the meeting voted for the status quo and it should be raised again at the next AGM.

One question that was raised and I would like to again publicly state both the clubs and my position on advancement.  Our club is well respected within the SPF and other photographic organisations, however we always struggle to gain the top places in our various external competitions. It is the committees and defiantly my intention to raise the standard of ALL of the members work, remember my statement when taking over as chairman "using all possible means" that still stands.  Enough said eh!  However should have a particular photographic concern please feel free to approach any of us and someone within the club will help out.

Co-opted committee members.   Again may I ask for some help from the members, we need ( it in the constitution) to fill vacancies on your committee. We need your help to set up the hall and to close it down at the end of the evening, currently John Walter and I are arriving well before the meeting starts to set up and are always the last to leave and frankly it is becoming a chore for both of us.

Next meeting is Leo Rich giving a slide presentation, Leo is always fun to listen to and his images are usually excellent.

Regards and keep snapping

Chairman's Newsletter No. 12

Dear Members,

What a fabulous night Paul Sansome gave us on Tuesday, not the most gifted of speakers, however he still managed to keep all of us enthralled with his talk. Moving from his life as an IT worker to joining and being a member of a local camera club, the step up to professional ranks and his work with a well known travel firm. His story of how by accident he took photos of Terns that earned him a 'highly commended' award in this years 'Veolia Wildlife Photographer of the Year' competition, should give all of us inspiration. At the end of the night your applause for Paul was in my opinion the longest/loudest I have ever heard at our meetings, and well deserved.

Your committee meeting on Thursday had one main topic
In response to several members raising concerns your committee spent a long time discussing our competition rules in respect of advancement from primary class to advanced in the digital section. The committee made two amendments, one we cannot action yet due to the clubs constitution. Basically we cannot change any competition rules during a season, as we have already started assessments we will now have to wait until the next AGM. More on this later possibly at the next club members evening.
The other amendment we can apply with immediate effect. New members joining the club will be asked to provide 8 prints and 8 PDIs for consideration/assessment by the committee or its represensitive. The committee will decide which category that member will be assessed in.

Next Tuesday is our Print Panel Trophy night and the judge Barry Day ARPS will hopefully have a hard job to find the best panel, the committee having due regard to previous judges comments have agreed to drop the individual image marking and simply leave the awards to the judge. That should make life easier for all of us.

Enjoy the weekend and keep snapping!

Mounting Board

At last we have found a good local supplier of mounting card!  They are based in Netherhampton.
The card quality is first class - Daler-Rowney 1.4mm thick. There are six colours.  Five have a smooth finish and one with a textured surface.
  • For us they will precut the board to 400x500mm for the same price as their standard 20x16inch. This price starts at £1.00 up to 10 sheets.
  • If you want you can have them with a precut hole for an A3 photograph [£1.50 for 5 cards].
  • You can also buy whole sheets at £5. Size of these is 828x1235mm [or 32.25x48.75inches]. You could get 4 400x500mm cards plus some extra card about 9 inches wide and 32 inches long.
Everthing is negotiable hole, size price, card size, double mounts. Please add VAT to these prices.
They also have a lot of end-of-run mounts.  These looked really nice. You would have to visit to find out what they have.
  • Please let Peter or Sheila know if you would like to take advantage of these prices and even better prices if we give Frith a bulk order. We will bring the colour swatch next Tuesday for you to choose.  We suggest that the textured version would be ideal to start off.  It is a delicate ivory white in colour.

Chairman's Newsletter No. 11

Dear Members,
The first assessment for the season had 66 images for the judge to look at. Geoff Roberts who is the only 'pro' photographer still involved in club work was almost lost for words and was astonished at the standard of some of the prints in our primary class. Stating several times that they belong in the advance section, he awarded a total of five 10s, well done to all of the authors, I must mention Andrew Greenwood who had two 10s. Good work Andrew.
One other mention is the achivement of moving up to the digital advanced class, well done Peter Read. The high scores in the primary class show that your committee's decision taken some time ago to increase the number of high scores for progression is beginning to work along with you getting better! The intention was to raise the standard of images and it is showing in the scores.
Mounting board. Sheila and Peter Read have found a new supplier of mounting board. Next week they will bring to the club a selection of the boards and are willing to act as 'gofers' for the members as the supplier is near to their home. You can get some ideas from the suppliers website www.frithandcompany.com and they will cut to 40 x 50 when requested.

Birds of Prey days - at Beaulieu 1st Nov contact direct please. www.amews.com

Next meeting is a digital lecture from Paul Sansome entitled 'Someone has to do it' Sounds like an anthem for your committee!

Chairman's Newsletter No. 10

Dear Members,
With so many entries for the audio visual evening the number of sequences was restricted to 24 which still gave just over 85 minutes of work to be seen and marked. Our thanks go to all of the authors who submitted their work and to Pat Ball who sorted through the entry to create an evening that the attending members said was both "enjoyable and something different". We have agreed to do something similar in next years program. Now the news you have been waiting for, the results of your voting. The top four were clear favourites with you all. All entrants had votes cast for them so don't be dismayed if you didn't make the top five this time!
In alphabetical order the five sequences you have chosen for the friendly match are:- 'Botswana' - John and Margery May, 'In the meadow' - Terry Jamieson, 'Look at Lisbon' - Norman Pease, 'Phanstasy' - Norman Pease and 'Victoria Falls' - John and Margery May.
Next Tuesday is our first 'assessment' for the season, a large entry is anticipated after the 'barbeque' summer! So please ensure your entry is submitted by Friday midnight and that your preference is numbered. Just a reminder that we have a new rule for assessments that images can only be seen in either print or digital format, not both.
Regards and keep snapping

2010 Arena Seminar,12th-14th March 2010, Riviera Hotel, Bournemouth

Over the years the annual Arena Seminar has built a reputation as being probably the best seminar on photographic art and practice in the UK. Past speakers include last year's Martin Parr and Tom Stoddart, and before them other leading practitioners such as John Blakemore, Michael Busselle & Denis Thorpe.
Each year enthusiasts from the UK and beyond come to hear presentations from four leading guest speakers and two host Arena speakers. Above all, it is a great opportunity to live and breathe photography for a whole weekend with like-minded people.
Last year was judged by many as our best seminar yet, but looking at this year's provisional programme it looks like we might just surpass ourselves once again! In 2010 we have another exciting line-up of superb photographers who have been provisionally booked for the event.
David Hurn
For many years David has had an international reputation as one of the Britain's leading reportage photographers. Admitted as a full member of Magnum in 1967 he has concentrated much of his time on documenting the dramatic changes that he has witnessed taking place in Wales, where he continues to live and work.
David is also a passionate teacher and set up the famous School of Documentary Photography in Newport. He is in demand throughout the world to lecture and run photographic workshops. His presentation is entitled 'Fifty five years in photography without dying of malnutrition'!
John Swannell
One of the UK's best known photographers, John spent many years working for the likes of Vogue, Harpers and Queen, Tatler and the Sunday Times, developing a very distinctive style of fashion and beauty photography.
He has photographed the Queen for her Golden Jubilee and The Princess Royal for her 40th and 50th birthdays, as well as being commissioned by Diana, Princess of Wales to photograph her with her two children. He has held many one-man shows at prestigious galleries including the Royal Academy in Edinburgh and the National Portrait Gallery in London.
Nick Turpin
Nick is a street photographer who observes and catches that moment in time. He describes his work not as reportage, not art, nor with any great technical craft or aesthetic beauty - 'they are just pictures about life'.
For the past 12 years Nick has been shooting design and advertising projects for clients such as Toyota, Jaguar, Land Rover, VW, IBM, Barclays Bank and Vodafone. He also lectures on street photography at Tate Modern and Yale School of Art, and was recently featured on Radio 4's 'Picturing Britain' series.
Ted Humble-Smith
Ted is recognised as one of the country's leading advertising photographers, producing outstandingly creative images. His highly impressive range of clients include Heineken, Tag Heuer watches, Harrods, GQ sports magazine, Tatler magazine, Glenfiddich, McLaren F1, Chrysler, Mercedes, Sony and Pioneer.
Once an art student of our very own Tony Worobiec, Ted then spent time assisting the likes of Andy Earl. Now specialising in his passion for still life photography, Ted loves the challenge of starting each campaign with an empty studio, knowing that everything in the final image will be there because he placed it or created it. The results are quite stunning! Not surprisingly, last year he won an award with the AOP.
Leigh Preston
Leigh Preston has been involved in photography since 1980 when he joined the Ordnance Survey Photographic Society. He started working in colour slides and A/V, taking mainly landscapes and travel pictures until 1985, when monochrome work began to become an obsession. He holds two RPS Fellowships, gaining a pictorial distinction in 1988, and in 1999, a Fellowship for photographic printing. He lectures all over the U.K. at clubs /societies /seminars and in Education. A bestselling book of his monochrome images, depicting Britain's Industrial landscapes, was published in 1993. He has had several one-man exhibitions in London, Dublin, Manchester, Birmingham and Belfast. Now semi-professional, he works as a photographic printer & college lecturer.
John Chamberlin
Working in many different disciplines, John's work touches on many aspects of the natural world, from landscapes, wildlife and travel. As his many galleries on this website show, he has travelled far and wide in pursuit of his photographic interests. A skilled colour worker, his images appeal to our senses to protect our environment and pause to consider the beauty of the natural world and there's more!

Chairman's Newsletter No8

Dear Members,

Congratulations to Peter Read and Andrew Greenwood for winning the Print of the Year trophies last Tuesday.  Click on each image to enlarge them.  Rosie Armes was very impressed with the quality of not just the winning prints but with the overall standard of the 56 images on display. Her critique was both interesting and educational, she inspired us with her knowledge of almost every subject that was presented offering advice alongside constructive criticism. My thanks to all the committee members who doubled up on the evenings tasks, thats what committee work is all about, but in particular I would like to thank George M and Brian L who both jumped in at the last minute to do the the tea/coffees, my mistake I forgot to ask for volunteers before we got started.

Martin has asked for some help with the Tom Mackie evening just a bit of assistance with crowd control etc, please let him know ASAP.
Prints for selection for the league and Salisbury exhibition, if you havent already done so please hand them in this coming week.

John Tilsley will be our guest speaker on Tuesday, it is bound to be an interesting time, John has been a stawart with both the SPF and the Western fed for many years and still works in the darkroom! Hence the title of his talk.

Saturday 26th - the long awaited celebration of the clubs 40th birthday, please ensure you are seated before the 7.30pm start time and it is free parking at Crosfield Hall.

Digital images of the year - Tuesday 29th.   The same rules apply as for the POTY trophies, only images shown in assessments or trophy comps during the previous season are eligible, you must have your entries in by midnight Friday.

Thought for the moment -  "don't count the days, make the days count"

Chairman's News No. 7

Dear Members,
Next week is the first of our new seasons internal competitions.  Malcolm will be running his first trophy night so please help him out by submitting your entry ASAP, the deadline is still midnight Friday however it would help him greatly if he had your emails sooner.  Use viewfinders@hotmail.co.uk.   Once again it is getting near the time when we need to select our league and Salisbury exhibition entries.  So the large print box will be available for you to give us any print that you would like to be considered. Go on make the selection committees job hard, give us your prints!!
Talking of prints, we have two missing prints from Stockbridge, they belong to Ian Ross.  We know that they were not left behind and that someone said they would take them!!  Please check your images you may have them somewhere!!
Tom Mackie Tickets.  Have you got yours?  We are getting very near the date and we really need to know the numbers who will be attending in order to give the caterers notice of how much food & wine to bring.  If you wait until the night we may not have sufficient for everyone!!  It would be a shame to spoil this event by not having enough to go around.  Let Mark or Jill know your intentions ASAP. ( 01264-361185 ).
Next week is a first for me, the first time I will be hosting a visiting judge, OMG!  I hope I can think of something nice to say about Rosie Armes!

Chairman's Newsletter No. 6

Subject: newsletter # 6

Dear members,
Last night was a most interesting evening watching the images from Wigan 10, at the end of the show to have several members say how inspired they were by the images was just icing on a good cake.
My thanks to Peter Read who also brought along 5 AVs that had also been made by members of the Wigan club, what a versatile bunch this club are! One member asked about borrowing the disc and I'm sure it can be arranged, requests to Pat Ball please.
For those not at the meeting some news about the Stockbridge exhibition, the recorded total of visitors was 318, this may well have been the most visitors to any of our exhibitions. The peoples choice for the most popular image was for the second year running George Marsh's 'Sandwich tern & Young'. We are attempting to book the same dates for next year.
Some photo opportunities this week, why not try the 'Dorset Steam Fair' this is reputed to be the biggest steam fair in Britain and its almost on our doorstep. I'm sure there will many chances to get candid shots of 'People working' for the Les Fredericks this season.
Next weeks meeting is a club members evening. Jillian and Mark will be holding a 'teach in' for those of you who would like to help run the 'Royale' this is scheduled for the small committee room, if you are interested in helping out please let Jillian know ASAP. Meanwhile the rest of the club are invited to submit questions for a Q & A session. Send your questions to me using email please( terence@jamieson10.plus.com) because the royale will be in use the questions need to be those that can be answered without using a visual display. However we should have the royale back for the second half of the evening and maybe we can do some demos if that is requested, or you may get a demo from me on how to put together an AV using 'Pro Show Gold' not that I'm an expert its more of just another way of creating AVs. So the contents of next weeks program is up to you.
One more commercial for the 'Tom Mackie' evening, please order/get your tickets ASAP, we are fast approaching the date and really need to push along the sale of tickets.
Regards and keep snapping

Chairman's Newsletter August 2009

Dear members,
As I sit here the morning after our exhibition I have mixed feelings and emotions, tired, yes but so are many others, proud, definitely and so should you all be.
The club went into this years exhibition with so many unknowns unanswered, yet we came out of it with an outstanding success. That is not just my opinion but mainly of the visitors who took the time to say so, many from other camera clubs both local and international. Yes, I spent some time talking to an American couple who quote "were passing through to Salisbury and just had to stop". It was great to see many of you at the hall to see a superb display of work by the brave ones who put up their work, some we have seen before but many more were new or previously not seen images. Your committee, all of them did a great job, however I must mention one particular man. John Walter spent weeks working on the new display boards and stands, he spent many hours working on the equipment and his ingenuity with so many different problems are in my mind exceptional. To all of the members who helped with setting up and taking down the display at both Stockbridge and back at Timsbury,my thanks, your efforts were much apprieciated.
May I offer the clubs wishes for a speedy recovery to Pat Ball's dad who is currently unwell and also to Tom Drew possibly our oldest member, we have sent him a get well card from the club.
One last chance for you to see another exhibition of images, thats today and Tuesday at the 'Bridge Gallery' Bedford Place Southampton. Called "For love of the sea" it is images taken by Louise Gardner or her husband, I'm told it is worth a visit.
Check out our website, Peter Read was busy with his camera at the exhibition! Link directly HERE

Chairman's Chat Aug 09

Dear Members,
I hope you are all enjoying the 'bar-b-Que summer' or at least the summer break. Talking of BBQs I just want to say one more big thank you to George and Margaret Marsh for hosting the BBQ at their home.
For those who were not there, the poor weather managed to miss Pittleworth and we had a very enjoyable evening.
There have been several other camera clubs exhibitions, the Havant CC 'open' was something special with entries from all over Europe. It is with some pride I can tell you that George Marsh's 'Porcelain Fungi' and my 'Fallow deer at the rutt' were both accepted, and they were not the worse on show, of course that's only my biased opinion! The Gosport CC was a little difficult to find and I think the space was too cramped to do the images justice, while the Beaulieu CC show has some super images and I think they will have a strong entry for our league match!
Next weekend is of course our exhibition, where space may also be a concern. The rebuild of the town hall is well underway and at the moment we are not sure just how much room we will have available to us.
I intend to visit there possible Monday to attempt a reconnaissance.
I look forwards to seeing as many of you as is possible next weekend.
My regards and keep snapping

Chairman's Newsletter July 26 2009

Dear Member,
An enormous thank you goes to John and Margery May for the showing of their AV's last Tuesday. We saw examples of their work from some of their very early productions upto the latest from a recent holiday.
John's simple, laid back approach came over so well and he answered the questions very well. The two tutorials from Barry Beckham showed just how simple it was to put together a basic AV in 'Pic2Exe'. If you are one of the lucky people who got a copy of the disc please make one extra copy to pass onto other club members.

George Marsh produced a 109 page printed copy of the 'Pic2exe' help file, he has lost it!! If you know of it's whereabouts please let George have it back.
Weymouth Library.
Saturday I took the opportunity to pop down to Weymouth to see the PAGB print exhibition. This display of 150 prints tours around various venues and will be at Weymouth until the end of the month.
Some thought provoking work is there to be seen, some makes me think " how can I get to that standard" and some "I wonder what the judges saw in that" others just made me think "I could do that".
Tuesday 28th
Bar-be-que at George & Margaret Marsh's home. The 5 day weather forecast gives a hope for a break in the rainy weather for Tuesday, so fingers crossed. George will have the 'barbies' going from 6:30pm ish, so bring your own food and drink, chairs and tables if you don't want to sit on the grass. Should there be any doubt on the weather front please ring 01794 301285 to check.
For those who have not been there before the directions to Georges place are - from the A3057 ( Romsey to Stockbridge ) take the turn to Mottisfont, pass the abbey entrance, and turn right just pass the social club into Oakley Road, stay on Oakley Road for about 1.8 miles, this is a narrow country lane, as you get to the top of a gentle rise Pittleworth Cottages are on the right. Please park as close together as possible, car sharing is a good option.
We hope to see many of you and your families on Tuesday if not then I wish you a happy holiday break, and hope to see you all at Stockbridge for the exhibition.
Have a happy snapping time
Terry

Cheap Phone Calls

A few members gathered in the Malthouse for a chat last eveing after the club assessment and we got round to talking about phone calls. It appeared that most people had no clue about the method we have been using for some years now.
This method costs nothing and you never sign up for anything.
All you do is prefix your calls with an access code and then follow with the phone number you wish to contact. The calls cost about 1p for calls throughout the UK and Australia, the USA, Zimbabwe and lots of other countries for landline calls.
Mobile calls and 0870 numbers can also be cheaper.
There are quite a few companies offering this service. We use two viz.
Cheaper Calls
and
Dial Wise

It is well worth trying this out.
