Chairman's Newsletter No. 26

Dear Member,
The Third and Last League Match.
Monday evening at Southampton CC saw the 3rd round of the league.  The evening did not start that well being locked out of the hall for quite sometime as the key holders turned up minus the keys!
Eventually they got the evening under way with Rosie Armes being the 3rd choice judge, however, it all ended well with ourselves and Southampton tying the prints section with 70.5 points.   This result that means we have won the right to progress into the semi finals. The PDI section resulted in a second place on the night. I cannot publish the individual results just in case it might prejudice future judging.  So if you want to know the scores and who will be going forward to the finals you will have to look on the club's notice board.

Marwell Zoo.  We do not have sufficient take up of places at the moment so if you want to go please let Mark know ASAP.

The army turned up on Tuesday evening and gave a superb presentation on the make up of the Army Film & Photographic Unit, its work and some excellent images were shown. Their last minute appearance threw me and I forgot to ask for someone to do the tea/coffees, so my thanks to Elizabeth and Joanne who jumped in at the last minute to help out.
Unfortunately the army projector was not calibrated to their laptop and the screen images were not as sharp as they could have been.Members who sat behind the laptop told me how good they were. The practical demo of the kit they wear going into the field was not only an eye opener but also a knee buckling experience. Below is a photo of the mug who got the short straw, taken on a mobile phone.  Double click to see the true majesty of the result!  Thanks to Roy for recording my discomfort!!
Another thing I forgot to do was to announce that although the AFPU guys Russ and Adrian would not take any payment for the evening we have agreed to make a donation to the 'Help for Hero's' charity/campaign, so Andrew will be sending a cheque for £50 to them.
However, the next time we see in the newspapers photos from Afghanistan we will be able to know what it takes to get those images and more importantly who may have taken them. I'm still trying to get my head around Adrian's quiet rather bland statement that he ran 500 yards under enemy fire got down and took photos, with all that kit on!! I think I would have been shooting back, but not with a 'Nikon'.

Club AV evening 16th March, we are still looking for a few more DAVs to make a full evening.

Next week we have Caroline Colgate to judge the Les Frederick trophies, with new, previously unseen work on two chosen themes we can expect to have an interesting evening.  Malcolm thinks we will get lots of PDIs so please ensure you send your images with your preferred order clearly shown.

Tripods. I'm not sure how many of the tripods are still available, Sheila Read says they were selling fast, check out the Salisbury CC website for the details and deal direct with the vendor.

Club fund raising evening on 23rd March.  Please get your tickets ASAP from Andrew and, once again, if you have any small items you would like to donate to the evenings raffle bring them on the night. Don't forget to bring your friends along because not many of us will get a better chance to see Madagascar's images taken by a very good photographer.

Hope to see you soon
Regards & keep snapping

Landscape Workshop in the Peak District in April

Hi All,
This will be an amazing and different approach to landscape photography. Paul Hill was my tutor when I did my MA Photography and Martin Shakeshaft was on the course and did some really good work - different approach and good quality. Nick Lockett also lectured on the course.

Note from editor. Sheila and I know Paul well having been with him both in The Place and in California.  He is very good.  A course to be recommended.

Chairman's Newsletter No. 25

Dear Member,
Tuesday evening was a successful one for us as the 2nd round of the SPFs league resulted in wins in both the prints and pdis. Judge Ian Bigg gave the images the hardest of assessments and was both critical of any perceived weak points and praised those that he considered warranted them. The results were - prints Viewfinders 70 points, Guernsey 63 pts, and PDIs Viewfinders 68.5 and Guernsey 63.

Next week on Monday we have the 3rd round of the league away to Southampton and Beaulieu with Southampton being the host club. They meet at Copythorne Parish Hall, Pollards Moor Road, SO40 2NZ, and it would be nice if we could have a few of us attending, we are all aware that Southampton is one of the strongest clubs in the area but I think we will also get some strong competition from Beaulieu having seen some of their work at their exhibition last year.

On Tuesday we have the Army photographers coming along to give a presentation, and I am relieved to report that they have confirmed that they will be attending.

Looking forward to the Les Fredericks tropies on 23rd Feb, please insure you present 'new work' for both. 'New work' in this case really means that the images have not been seen in either assessments or trophy competitions at the club before.

The notice board. Have you had a look at our club notice board lately? I had a quick look at it on Tuesday and was surprised to seen a list of equipment for sale. It appears that John and Margery May have some surplus Canon cameras and lenses for sale. I have asked for first refusal on one of the lenses, attached is Johns list, please contact him direct if you want any of it.

Hilliers Gardens has another photo exhibition running until 10th March. Called "Our world through the lens" it should have some interesting images to see, you may of course get some ideas!

Possible night out at Marwell

Dear Members,

A number of you have expressed an interest in a possible evening photography visit to Marwell Zoo in the summer and we have now been able to investigate the possibilities.
Marwell can provide a tailored 2 hour private tour of the park from 6:30 - 8:30pm for a minimum of 15 people accompanied by a keeper, with plenty of opportunities for photography after the crowds have gone home!

They currently have an available slot for Tuesday 22nd June, which is one of the evenings that we have yet to fill in this year's programme.

The cost of the tour would be £18.50 (£16.50 for consessions) per person. They do also offer a BBQ service to follow the tour, but this would increase the cost considerably, so you may prefer to go on for a bite and a drink somewhere local afterwards.

Please can you let us know, as soon as possible, if you'd be interested in participating in this on the 22nd June, by responding to Jill and myself at markkoernich@hotmail.com

If we have enough interest, we can then go ahead and make a booking with Marwell.

Many thanks,
Mark & Jill

Chairman's Newsletter No. 24

Dear Member,

Martin Western's lecture last Tuesday once again was a fine example of the use of slides, coupled with an experts flow of information creating a most interesting talk. We were left in no doubt that Martin's lifetime passion is his devotion to the African elephant. One member said to me that he had seen several of the famous iconic images years ago and that they had stuck in his mind, and how nice it was to finally meet the author. I'm happy to concur his words.

It is with a sadness that I received a note from Adrian Northover this week offering his resignation from the club. The newer members may not have seen too much of Adrian just lately, however, in the past he was a hard working enthusiastic member and we will all miss his sense of humour. One of his reasons was that he would not want to take up a place within the club when his leaving would allow another member to join; that is typical of the sort of man Adrian is and I have wished him and Anne the very best for the future. I'm sure you will agree and support the sentiments.

Next weeks meeting is the 2nd round of the SPF league and it is likely to be a shorter than normal match because unfortunately Prism PS have pulled out of the league for this season, I believe they intend to compete fully next year.
So it looks as if we will have a battle with Guernsey PC. They are an excellent photographic club having many well qualified members and are bound to produce some good images.

This of couse means we will have to find a 'fill in programme' for the second part of the evening. I have the disc produced from the PDI entries to this years SPF exhibition. I know not many of you will have seen it yet, so it will give you an idea of how the other clubs within the SPF are doing and maybe some ideas for your own photography. Watch out for some of the 'creative' images!!

One more little request for Tuesday, John Walter will not be in attendance so if you can arrive a few minutes earlier and help set up, it will help, thanks!

My regards and keep snapping
Terry
