Chairman's Newsletter No. 36

Dear Members,
After last weeks disappointing lecture, last nights went full circle. It just kept getting better and better, Rosie Armes is an exceptional photographer/lecturer.

What a pity that we had such a small number of members attending, here was an opportunity to see loads of before and after images.
Most of us would have been happy to have taken Rosie's 'before' prints yet to see them in their 'after' state really brought home how images can be improved using (quote) 'some very basis adjustment tools'.

Rosie makes no secret about the fact she loves digital photography and excels in the post production work, she openly admits to taking thousands of images knowing that she will delete at least 80% and then par down the remainder, just where she gets her drive and stamina from is beyond me.
The final image shown last night was 'social documentary' at its very best. I make no excuse when I say that this image did what it was ment to do, it shocked me, gave me goose pimples and a cold shudder all over.

Last nights lecture was inspirational and Stan's final summary point/word just about hit the nail on the head, it was "brilliant".

Next week. Post the bank holiday there is no meeting.

May 11th. Is the 7th assessment of the season with a visit from Andovers John Randall, please make sure your images/entries are submitted on time.

May 1st - 15th. Our friends from the Romsey Art Group are holding their exhibition at the 'Mountbatten' centre in Lee. Somewhere to go in the bank holiday rain!!!

Linda Rudd has written to explain that she has found it increasinly hard to remain an active member and the needs of her young family have to take priority on her time. I am sure we all shall miss her not just because she is a good photographer with a photographers eye, but also because she brought a lovely smile with her and a 'wicked' sharp sense of humour. I hope that someday soon she will return to the club.

Thats it for now as I must go and review lots of my old photos and to see if I can improve them, just a little dodging and burning, maybe another crop, add a little tint, delete some colour etc etc.

Have a good break and I look forward to seeing you at the assessment.

My regards and keep snapping.
Terry

Dear Members,
The sales team from Epson brought along lots of goodies to eat, several different brochures to read and a slide show telling us how good their products are!! However I found the evening slightly disappointing as they did not really give us any practical advice on how to improve our printing. This is possibly why the second half of the evening saw most of the members disappearing early. The prices and vouchers offered by Epson do not appear to be very competitive and several members have pointed out better prices available elsewhere.

Dear Members,
With so much going on over the past few days it was a pleasant change to be able to have the time to properly welcome John Wigley our judge for the assessment. Thanks to those who came alone early and helped set up, and of course those who stepped in on the night to cover absentees. Jill's organisation once again helped the evening flow smoothly and John was suitably impressed at the standard in the primary class prints and PDIs. Several top scores were awarded and it was practically nice to see Keith Bamber progress to the advance group.

Next week. For those who were not at the meeting Mark gave out a few tips about what to expect from the Epson team next week. It would seem that the offer of some printing is on the cards. Therefore if you have a particular image that you would like to be printed bring it along on a memory stick. There will be tips on printing and possible some packs pf paper for sale. Do not miss this one!

Computer Virus. A few words of warning to all of us. During the recent club DAV evening, a virus was passed, from a memory stick (this virus gains entry via the USB port) to our stand alone 'Royale' computer and to other memory sticks. This was picked up very early and a series of messages was circulated to those who had access to the 'Royale'. With much help from other members the problem was isolated and we hope that is the end of the matter. However this problem could have been avoided with some simple and basic procedures, which everyone of us should be capable off and practicing. Please ensure your personal PCs are protected by anti virus software. There are several free programmes available AVG and Avast being just two, both are easy to access and should give you adequate protection. With next weeks program in mind, lots of different memory sticks being used, we do not want a repeat of a few weeks ago. I do not think the Epson team would be too happy if we infected their equipment! So please be aware of the problem, if you do not currently have protection get it NOW!

Congratulations. He was upset and felt that he had let the club down, who is he? Peter Read after the scoring at the recent Print Championships. We all know that when we submit images to any form of judgement we open ourselves to being delighted or disappointed. When there are 3 judges the personal likes and dislikes are tripled. So on that day Peters 'Creek Men' was not flavour of the day, along with many others! So it is a pleasure to announce that the same image has been awarded a 'Certificate of Merit' at the Winchester Open 2010. Knowing how hard it is to get an acceptance at this well respected competition to go one step farther is some achievement. Very well done Peter, maybe there is hope for the other poor scorer that day, me!

Photo opportunities. Friday, Saturday & Sunday at Thruxton for the Super Bikes. Saturday & Sunday at Langrish near Petersfield for the Sidecar and Quad bike Grand Prix. www.langrishmx.com for details.

My regards and why not keep snapping!

Chairman's Newsletter No. 33

Dear Members,
Isn't it nice to see that finally spring has started, maybe just a little too late for the Easter break, however the sudden rush of colour in our gardens and the countryside gives all of us a quick lift.
I hope you have been taking advantage and getting the camera aired!
Attached are 3 pages of scores from the friendly match at the New Forest CC and the SPFs Print championship.
New Forest match. Leo Rich started his judging with a grumpy face having been in his garden all day taking instructions from 'senior management' whinging on about having to paint trellis frames and gardening, declaring that the last thing he expects is to give is any tens tonight! The first print on the easel was flowers in and around a painted picture frame...... ten! The evening continued in that sort of frame ( pun intentional) with good hearted banter between Leo and the audience, along with some very constructive critique. As you will see from the scores we allowed the hosts to win both the prints and the PDIs. However I did not help too much by forgetting to include one of our digital images on the disc, so my apologise to Mike Liberson and the club. The fact that the hosts offered to drop one of their scores did not help us even though I insisted that 'the kill' would have got a ten ,they took away a ten and still beat us!
My thanks to all of our members who came along and we just about managed to match them in numbers attending, for a small club they have produced some good work.

Print Championships. Sunday at Littleton was as is normal for SPF functions a good weather day and the new style format for the annual print competition was well attended, the organisation by the host club Highcliffe & Infinity CC and the SPFs was first class. Three judges all from the Western federation worked their way through 440 prints and out of necessity their scores were tight, and I (and several others) found it hard to comprehend the rational at times. Maybe that's why I am not a judge. However as they say the cream came to the top and the two clubs we were up against in the league semi final Chichester CC and Bournemouth PS being first and second. The PAGB gold medal went to Ann MacDonald with Alison Cawley, John Mahanoy and Rosie Armes getting the judges medals. My thanks to all of the members whose prints were used, whatever the scores, they came up against some very high standard images.

SPF league 2010/11. There are some major changes to the organisation planned for next season, although at the moment this may change, it is planned to revise the league into a 'football' type of league system with promotions and demotions within the structure. Currently this is planned as a PDI only league but after Sundays announcement by the league secretary there may also be an inclusion of prints, depending on the response from all the clubs.
Your committee discussed this subject last week and we had planned to make our objections known to the SPF and possibly organise our own 'friendly' print only night with several other clubs. So our planning for next season while well on the way to completion there are still dates to be filled.

Hope to see you all on Tuesday for the assessment

My regards and keep snapping
