The club recently received some sample 280gsm papers from Photopapers Direct that was put through its paces by Terry and George with both being very impressed by the resulting prints. I'm told that prices are very competitive compared to equivalent Epson papers. Photopapers Direct have given a 5% discount to club members, the discount code is available from Martin Brown and is valid until October next year.

The Christmas Card evening resulted in the choosing of a beautiful picture of sheep in the snow taken by Lisa Baker Richardson, this image was way ahead in votes than any of the other shortlisted images.
Well done to all these authors.
The second half of the evening we were captivated by a tutorial by David Noton, called Chasing the Light. David shared with us his approach to getting the best possible images. This was enjoyed by everyone present and I am sure it has whetted the appetite to attend one of his lectures. Unfortunately the one Jill mentioned in Andover is sold out but he will be at Bournemouth Electric Camera Club(not to be mixed up with Bournemouth Photographic Society) on the 17th November, visit David's or the BECC website for details. David will also be giving this lecture next March at the Southampton Memorial event, again details can be found on Southampton's website.
Next week is assessment evening with Alan Cooke judging our images, please ensure you send them in by Friday evening.
Andrew Kirby is still in hospital at this moment in time as he is still undergoing therapy to get his mobility back. Again we wish him well and I am sure he would welcome any visits from members. If you are able to pop in and see him then please contact Margaret first.
See you all next week

Audio Visual Evening Results
We had a return of 35 papers of which two papers showed that the members had missed some of the AVs.
I numbered each paper and recorded the scores. On the two papers with missed scores, John Walter and I have calculated the average score on each of the papers and put that score in red on the spreadsheet. This in itself has now created another concern with the 5th & 6th places being so close.
I believe that in fairness to Pat (being given an average score) we should declare both AVs as equal 5th place. Which is how I have shown it on the spreadsheet. I have retained the papers and they are available should any of you wish to see them.
My thanks to all of you for allowing your AVs to be shown.
Regards
Terry

PAGB News No 34
Welcome to e-news 34 with news of the Inter-Club Print Championship, the Inter-Federation Projected Image Competition together with updates on the problems we have had with AFIAP and EFIAP applications and an update on the GB Cup DVD - and more.
Please also have a look at the following request for input from the RPS - even if you are not an RPS member.
Most DSLR's launched in the last 12 months, and even many compact cameras, include a facility to shoot Video. Some of the more up-market models allow the shooting of Full HD Video at 1920x1080 pixels.
The RPS would like to know the extent of the interest in using DSLR cameras to shoot video. This includes both the Members and non Members of The Society. To this end, the RPS have uploaded a questionnaire to their website. This can be found at Video Survey.
We would very much appreciate if all readers could complete this survey. It should only take about 5 minutes to do so. Even those who are not using their cameras for this purpose, or have no intention of doing so, are asked to assist with this project. This will help The RPS to gauge the extent of the interest and to set future direction. Of course, shooting the material is only the first stage in the process of making a video. They have therefore included questions relating to the editing of the visual material and then mixing it with sound to make a complete production.

Chairman's Newsletter No. 54
I should have reported that after a delay of 3 weeks I was at last able to present the PDI Primary image of the year trophy to a surprised Martin Brown - well done Martin.
AV Evening. Last evening was well supported with 6 members sending in their AV sequences, we saw 20+ sequences so we had a full evening. It was not easy to score these. Members remarked afterwards on how they had enjoyed the evening and that they thought the standard our members are achieving in their AV's was high, and I have to agree with them. I would have been proud to have been the author of any one of them. Terry has taken all the score sheets away and will work out the top 5 or 6 and let us know which of the AV's will be used in the competitions coming up. Thank you Terry for your work on this.
PRINTS for Exhibition - don't forget to bring some along for Martin next week, he will be choosing our entry for the exhibition; so we want some good work please.
A plea as you are all aware we have no external competition secretary and it is only because one or two people have come forward to take on a few of the competitions that we are able to participate. We have 80+ members so I hope that during this year someone will think about stepping into this role at the AGM otherwise next year will see us drop out of all external competitions.
We are still looking for your participation - this coming week we have the Christmas card choice to make. So send in your images by Friday. Then come along next week to help choose your favourite.
Christmas Dinner. I have started to collect deposits for the Christmas Dinner (£5 per person) so please bring your money along next week since I have to pay by the 5th November. If you will not be at the club next week but want to come then please email me.
Goodbye to Sheila. Several members attended the funeral of Sheila Budden last week, and it was good to see Edna Webb there as well. Edna was the wife of the late Stan Webb, one of the founder members of our club, which just goes to show how long Arthur and Sheila have been members. Arthur I know appreciated the support of Viewfinders as well as their friends and family and it spoke volumes to see the number of people wanting to celebrate Sheila's life and support Arthur in his loss.
Hope several of you managed to visit the Landscape of Year 2009 at Moors Valley Country Park (not sure if it is still there - check the website) Roy and I visited last week and there are some stunning images, even in the junior section!
see you all next week

Bryan Powell did a good job of judging our first assessment of the year but it was a disappointment that entries were low; so come on get snapping for the November assessment.
Bryan announced that he is retiring from judging and this was his 14th visit to us over his 26 years of judging. We wish him well.
A couple of reminders
AV's needed for 26th October - we want to have plenty to choose from that will go forward to the friendly battle later in the year. If you can put together a 5 minute sequence then please let Terry Jamieson know.
Next Week
We have Andrew Whitmarsh giving a lecture; World War II Photographs, I am sure we are going to see a very different view of the war than we would have previously seen.
See you all next week

Christmas Dinner - There has been another suggestion put forward for a venue, The Malthouse Inn, a Christmas menu £16.95 per person. Can you please indicate to Martin Brown if you would like to support going out for a meal and which venue would be your preference, by the end of October please as we will need to get booked in. If you would like to put forward a different idea for our Christmas celebration then please do so by the same date.
Next Week - Assessment evening, work in by Friday please, judge for the evening is Bryan Powell.
Look forward to seeing you all there

Don't forget your cameras next week to experiement with soem night photography.
The league - You will have another opportunity to hand in more prints on the 5th October - I am sure there may be some trophy winners that were not in the print of year competition. Please send any PDI images from the trophy competitions to me on le_lambeth@yahoo.co.uk by 5th October - or hand in a disk on the 5th Oct.
There are a few small jobs that members could help the committee with to make things easier, such as phoning the judge or lecturer the week before attendance. If you feel you can give us some help then please make contact with one of the committee.
Thank you to those members who have committed to taking our prints around the league rounds - we are still looking for someone to go to Chichester with the prints on the 7th April.
The Chairman's Evening - 4th January - I know it is sometime off but want to give you as much time as possible. As I announced it will be a competition on humour - PDI images only please. This will be judged by myself with the help of the audience - so we will be looking for the laughter value rather than technical quality. You can be as creative as you want as long as the main image has been taken by yourself. I am after making it as much fun as possible. So keep your eyes peeled and your thinking caps on!
See you all on the 5th October.

Stockbridge exhibition was very successful with over 700 visitors over the 3 days, this event again led to us having visitors on Tuesday who are likely to join. I am sure you will agree this makes a very successful showcase for our club and the timing is good being just before we restart our season. The committee have agreed to hold it the same time next year. Don't forget, you don't have to be an advanced worker or have a whole board to have work shown, if you want to submit just one print that is fine. In fact we are keen to show work across all levels within our club including our newer members.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
As you are aware this year we are without an External Competition secretary, therefore the committee last evening agreed that we would not enter the following competitions;
- PAGB Gt British Cup
- Southern Photographic Federation Digital Championship - November
- Southern Photographic Federation Print Championship - Feb/March
We will however enter the SPF league and the SPF Exhibition as members of the committee have agreed to sort these.
I will be collecting the prints on 14th September, if you do not wish your work to be considered then please let me know otherwise I will take all the entries but I shall also collect work on the 5th October if you have other work you would like to be considered.
I have all the digital work that has been entered in the assessments but if you want to have work from trophy competitions to be considered can you please either let me have it on disk or email to me at le_lambeth@yahoo.co.uk by 5th October.
I will also be calling on members to commit to take the prints to one of the clubs hosting in our league, this will be just a case of taking the prints along and recording the scores and letting me have the score sheets afterwards. The dates and venues are:
- 11th November - Basingstoke Camera Club
- 1st February - Ordnance Survey Camera Club- Roy has agreed to do this one.
- 10th February - Farnborough Camera Club
- 28th February - Salisbury Camera Club
- 7th April - Chichester Camera Club
We will host on the 8th March 2011.
If you are able to make a firm commit to one of these dates or if you are interested in helping the committee with this position then please contact me.
Please send your entries in by Friday for the Print of the Year - this will be judged by Rosie Armes.
Look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday.
If you are looking for something to do at the weekend check out Heritage Open Days website as many places are free entry Frid/Sat/Sun.

Mottisfont Exhibitions
I have just come from assisting with the set up, and it's a stunning exhibition.
If you are a National Trust member then entry is free - otherwise normal Mottisfont NT admission charges apply to gain access to the gardens, river walks, house and exhibitions. There is even a new ice cream parlour!
Mottisfont is actually a good day out for all the family. They also have a very interesting Beatrix Potter exhibition at the moment of some of the original watercolours she painted to illustrate her books. Evidently these paintings are only exhibited every ten years or so!
Another one for the diary - Andover Split Image Photographic Society will be exhibiting at Mottisfont later this year - Saturday 28th August to Thursday 2nd September.

Important - dont forget the barbeque at George Marsh's on Tuesday - hope weather will be kind to us, if there is any doubt then please give me a ring 023 80 323431 after 5pm.

Winchestery Discovery Centre has a good programme on at the moment - the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2009, on until the 12th September - brilliant exhibition, although after looking at the entries from the under 11 year olds we did think about selling our cameras!!
Simon King - Wild Life Thurs 29th July tickets £10, Simon will talk about his work and show some of his images.
Ben Osborne - Private View Tuesday 24th August tickets £10, Ben was the 2007 overall winner of Wildlife Photographer of the year.
Closer to home I must give a big thank you to Gary Richardson for organising the butterfly walk last week, although he was unable to make the sun shine and the wind stop blowing, but for the 20 or so members in attendance it did not matter. It provided an opportunity for us all to talk to each other, give help to those who needed it and adjourn to the pub to discuss the merits of 'the one that got away'! Everyone enjoyed the evening.
If anyone would like to come forward and organise a walk for mid August then I will circulate details. Other than that we have the Exhibition at Stockbridge Town Hall on 28th - 30th August.
We will be back at the club on the 7th September, but I will send out another newsletter before then.

We are still looking for someone to come forward to take the position of external competition secretary - please make contact if you would like to assist with this position - don't forget with no one in this position we will not be able to take part in external competitions which our club has always valued in the past.
We have had some interest shown in helping with the programme so watch this space on that.
Last but not least - what a good evening last night, with the members talking about their work and giving hints and tips to the rest of us on how to achieve similar results. I am sure many of you like me learnt something from their talks and it would be great if we could hold more of these type of evenings with a wider spread of members telling us a story behind a particular picture.

Photo Course in Sussex.
Much of our photography will be centered around the Cuckmere Valley, near Seaford in East Sussex. We will shoot sweeping vistas of Downland hills, the Cuckmere River, The Seven Sisters and as the sun sets, beach scenes and majestic cliffs.
This is suitable for those of all levels, from the beginner to the more experienced shooter.
In order for Robert to spend quality time with each person, numbers will be limited to just 5. Aside from making transportation to various locations much easier, it also makes for a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
Cost for the day will be £70 which includes transportation to all locations.
For full details including how to book, please visit my website at www.robertcanis.com
or phone me on 07939 117570.

Ex-Chairman's Newsletter No. 43
I bet some of you are thinking why? Why am I getting a newsletter from Terry? It's simply a matter of logistics, I've got a distribution list and Lynn has yet to set hers up.
So for the next couple of weeks you may get more than you bargained for, at least I hope so!
At last nights AGM the following positions were confirmed by the meeting:-
Club chairman(person) ......... Lynn Lambeth,
Vice Chair...... Keith Bamber,
Treasurer..... Andrew Kirby,
Secretary.... Martin Brown,
Internal assessments....Jillian Koernich,
Internal Trophies..... Malcolm Richardson
External comps..... Vacant,
Programme sec.... Vacant,
Committee members... Margaret Kirby,
Mark Koernich & John Walter,
1 x vacancy.
Auditor... Liz Whitemore,
SPF rep... Jack Whitemore (TBC) & Lynn Lambeth.
Lynn has asked for someone to assist with the vacant positions in particular the ext comps position, George Atkins has said he would help, guide and mentor anyone through the season, please contact Lynn ASAP.
Les Frederick trophies subjects. The meeting voted for the following subjects:-
Prints - Simplicity,
PDIs - Dawn and Dusk.
Photographer of the Year. I was very happy to present the trophies to two outstanding photographers, for a seasons excellent work.
Prints - George Marsh with 58.5 points and PDIs to Roy Lambeth with 59 points.
Promotions. At the last assessment Chris Maiden's printed image scored enough points to move him up into the advance class, well done Chris.
2010/11 SPF leagues.
The SPF have just issued the 'football type' leagues for next season.
The SPF have created the first format by using a scoring system from last season to create as far as is possible leagues of equal ability.
With 8 leagues in the PDI format we were placed into league #2, and our opponents are - New Forest, Farnborough, Solent, Fareham & Porchester, Petersfield and Basingstoke.
With just 5 leagues in the print section we are in the top league No.1 a tough group indeed!
Bournemouth, Farnborough, Basingstoke, Chichester, Ordnance Survey, & Salisbury!
This coming season looks to be an exciting one with promotions and demotions being the final outcome!
Having been one of the clubs that badgered the SPF to hold a print league, we really must take part. So we really need an External Competitions secretary. If you want to see the full list of the leagues please look at the SPF website, it's too extensive for me to type here! You may be surprised at some of the clubs below us!!
13th July - The evening will split into two halves, with presentations of prints by me x 1, Peter Read x 2, Martin Brown x 2, George Marsh x 1, Roy L x 1, Gary Richardson x 1, and if he is attending Mark K x 1.
Gerald Ponting has 2 or 3 PDIs to talk about. Given each one a maximum of 5 minutes this should comfortably take up the first hour. The second half I have some discs from three of this years international competitions
we can easily show a full hour s worth of PDIs.
20th July - the butterfly walk is being organised by Gary Richardson. The location is Danebury Hill, To get to Danebury, take A30 west out of Stockbridge, towards Salisbury. Stay in the outside lane on the dual carriageway, about half way up the hill out of Stockbridge, turn right. Follow the road for about 2 miles and Danebury is on your left. It is signposted on the duel carriageway ( brown sign ), and you can't fail to miss Danebury when your driving by. There is plenty of parking on site, just cross the cattle grid, then continue up the hill. Time of start is 6pm.
27th July - the BBQ at Georges place. Timings TBC.
My regards to all of you and many thanks for your messages last night and by emails.
Keep on and Happy Snapping!

Chairman's Newsletter No. 42
This weeks Mix & Match was great fun and that is down to the efforts of Jack and Liz who did the organising. Many prints were brought in by the members and we settled on a figure of 36 images for each side. Jack acting as judge went to some extreme lenghths to find a link between the prints, if at all possible. How he managed to link 3 metal structures to a street scene of old houses beggers belief ! If I remember correctly it was the street lamps being made of metal or the colour of them! As it was such a prolonged first half we agreed to restrict the last part to just 12 images and a close result gave the winners a massive one point win! The real winners were the attending members who had an entertaining evening joining in with the banter.
For Sale.
Sheila Read brought in her Lumix FZ 30 with all it's bit and pieces in an attempt to raise funds, as I go to press, it is still available at a very reasonable price £70, however, I know it generated interest so it may be sold, you'll have to speak to Sheila if you want a good light weight possibly second camera.
Next Week.
Is of course the AGM, this is a very important club event, where the past year is reported and the next committee selected. Without a committee any club will fail and that would be a pity for all of the members. We still need a couple of members to join us and help run the club, experience is not a requirement just the willingness to do a little bit extra for the enjoyment of everyone.
I hope to see you all there. POTY awards & choosing the subjects for next seasons Les Fredericks trophies.
The club Website.
Peter Read tells me that he has added several usful links to the website, check it out.
Photo opportunities.
With lots of events going on all over the area here are just two to think about:-
The Winchester Hat fair.......... Hatfair
Lepe country park....The New Forest Remembers D-Day at Lepe
13th July meeting.
Okay I guess you all failed to hear /read in the newsletter # 40 about this club event. I still have yet to get your names and the images you want to talk about. I will start the evening off by explaining how and why I took one of my particular images, this might take just a couple of minutes, it depends if any of you want to ask a question and more importantly if I want to/can answer it! So who is next?
I hope to fill the first half of the evening with this type of answer/question session, the second half I have a couple of 'open international' discs to show.
20th July.
This years butterfly walk is being organised by Gary Richardson and there is a change of venue, it is at Danebury Hill from 6:00pm. Parking and directions details are TBA.
My regards
Terry

Chairmans Newsletter No.42
Marwell Zoo on a very warm bright summer evening was a pleasure to be at. The animals were mainly, like the rest of us, hot and to bothered to move around, however, there was plenty of photos being taken and those that I managed to speak with were enjoying the visit. The two young ladies who were our escorts answered questions and pointed out various interesting facts as we went around.
I am told that Georges talk and demonstrations were well received and some useful info passed around.
There is a new page on the web site about this HERE
So our thanks to Mark, Jillian and to George for their contributions and organisation.
Next week is the Mix and Match club evening, attached is an explanation for those of you who are unsure what this means. Jack Whitemore is to be the judge and Liz will be the scorer, what we do need if anyone has one is a timer. So all we need is for you to turn up with a selection of prints, its not necessary for them to be mounted and for you to join in the fun!
my regards and keep snapping!

Chairman's Newsletter No. 41
With a full range of scores from George Walsh the last of this years assessments was subjected at times to some light hearted banter from the members with George. Yet his deep and vast knowledge of photography allowed him to pin point the salient points of every image. He did not fall into the old trap of describing the image, after all we can see what is presented, however the often short pause showed that he was studying the images with an experts eye. My thanks to Stan for his summing up and to everyone who assisted with the smooth running of the evening.

Treasure Hunt 8th June
The first of this seasons outdoor activities was under threat from the weather yet come the early evening a nice break of sunshine welcomed those who attended the treasure hunt. Jack and Liz were ensconced in the car park and set the teams off with the list of 53 questions/clues. John Walter and myself decided to do the questions in reverse, not just because the last line read "see you in the Old House at Home" !!! What the residents of Romsey thought when seeing groups all wandering around trying to find the answers beggars belief. However as if by magic we all managed to find our way to the pub and then it started...... Liz went through the 'correct' answers and all those who had alternatives raised their objections or asked for clarification and the noise levels waxed and waned in response. The early leaders in the clubhouse were Keith and his wife (Romsey residents) which according to them was not an advantage!! Not much! However I do believe the result may be affected by the late comers who stopped off at the chippie, the result is under review by the stewards.
22nd June. The lecture by George Atkins for those not attending Marwell Zoo, George is still waiting for your questions on anything to do with photo manipulation, whatever your software. One subject your committee has asked him to cover is 'how to prepare your PDIs for assessments/competitions' .
The clubs resizing software. Namely PicShowR. It has come to the committee attention that there may be a concern with the software that affects the colour range. If you think your images do not look correct when shown at the club, we suggest you stop using the software. George Atkins will show you how to resize and add a black background using any normal software at the demo on the 22nd. I will attempt to create written instructions over the next few days.
Les Fredericks 2010/11. Thank you all for the great response for suggestions. Your committee had a list of 57 to whittle down to a more manageable 12, these will be circulated by Martin with the AGM agenda.
Your committee 2010/11. There are 3 members of this years committee who will not be standing for re-election so if you feel you can help the club we will be circulating nomination forms with the AGM agenda, its your club so please concider helping.
Festivals in Winchester 2010. Bob Eaton has been helping to put together one of the activities for this year. A photographic exhibition at the Winchester Discovery Centre 26th June - 25th July.
There is more details available at www.festivalsinwinchester.co.uk
13th July meeting. Currently this is shown on the program as a club evening. One of the repeated suggestions from the members is that we should have more 'in house' activities. Another suggestion and other clubs do a similar thing is for members to stand up and explain their thoughts, actions behind their images. Possibly to counter some critique from a judge that they thought was not correct or missed. Did you get a ten score? great tell us about it, missed out with a 9.5 score? why? did the beggar knock off half a point? Come on air your grievance!
So this is your invitation to bring back to the club your image and spend just a few moments explaining how, when, where, what camera, settings, lens and so on. If you think you would like to take part please let me know if it is print or PDI you want to talk about. This is not just restricted to images shown it might be one you have not shown yet feel it warrants a viewing. Maybe you have one that you would like some advice on how to improve it. How about that special website you visit for the images or help. I know it is not easy for some to get up and speak out but we are all of a like mindedness, friends and I have yet to see anyone get bitten!!
Next Week The last assessment for this season, Martin will be organising as Jillian & Mark are on vacation, Andrew will be trying to work the projector, John will be acting treasurer and I will be panicking as normal!! George Walsh is an easy going sort of judge and I'm sure he will handle any concerns with our presentation. Entries to the normal process.
My regards and keep snapping
