SPF News Update

SPF News Update 8 March 2012

As we seem to be rushing headlong towards Summer Time, light evenings and Easter, so the activities within the Federation are building up, with lots of exciting stuff on the agenda. Check out the SPF Web-site to make sure you have all the details… no better place to start than the Diary, see http://www.southernfed.org.uk/diary.htm

The big event in March is the Print and PDI Championships on Sunday 25th all the information is available at http://www.southernfed.org.uk/championships.htm

As you'll be aware, Lynn Lambert has been urging everyone to let her have your best prints for consideration for the PAGB Exhibition. A lot were received at the Reps meeting in February, but another collection will be made after the Print Championships. So, if you have been hanging onto a print for the Championships, you'll be able to pass it on to Lynn on 25th. We are really pushing hard this year to get the very best of what is produced in the SPF so that we can get the placing we deserve next time round. Please note that the Council has agreed to amend the Championship rules so that an image which has previously been entered in a PAGB Inter-Federation competition can now be used.

The Print and PDI Leagues are now coming towards a conclusion, with several of the leagues already completed, and promotion / relegation decided for a number of clubs ! How is your club doing? ....check it out at http://www.southernfed.org.uk/league.htm where you'll find links to the individual leagues. Note also that at the Reps meeting last month it was agreed that from next season titles will be read out when judging... so if you think that will influence a judge there's another challenge to your creativity!

Finals Day for the League is on 13th May, at Copythorn Village Hall, SO40 2HN, as detailed at that same link. Please also be aware that we will be seeking a new person to run the Leagues next season, so let's have a volunteer so that the Leagues can continue.

At the Reps' meeting, Ken Scott, who has been co-opted to the Council as Judging Advisor, set out the vision for the SPF's new approach to developing the skills of judges, through judging workshops, mentoring, evaluations etc. The first two workshops are already full, but prospective judges can apply for the following workshops. See the web-page for information at http://www.southernfed.org.uk/judging.htm Please note that unlike previous workshops, there is no provision for spectators at these.

A big event is planned for Sunday 15th April. This is a "Total Photography Fitness Workout" presented by Jeff Morgan http://www.elmstudio.com/ whose photography tutorials have been published in many magazines across Europe, USA and Asia.It should be a great day, and a distinctly value-for-money bargain cost of £10. This is the first of the SPF's efforts to expand on our role of "promoting the advancement of photography" as set out in the Constitution. There can be no better way to reinvigorate your creativity and prepare for the long days of summer and photographic holidays; hurry up to get your ticket before they sell out ! ......these can be purchased individually or your club rep can arrange a bulk order; all of the details on this are set out at http://www.southernfed.org.uk/jeffmorgan.htm

Another innovation now planned is the Audio Visual Championships, which will be held for the first time in Overton on 28th October. The details of this are being finalised now and will be published within the next few days, so keep a look-out. If your club is likely to take part, please let Lynn Lambert past.pres@southernfed.org.uk know so that we can plan for the appropriate numbers. To get a good flavour for this event, especially if your club has not been involved previously in AV competition, you can do no better that to attend the Oak Leaf Salver digital AV competition at the North Hants Photographic Club on 23rd March at Andover Road Hall, Oakley, Nr. Basingstoke RG23 7HA ; for a map click on

Those who would like any further details please contact Ernie Fullbrook at secretary@nhphoto-soc.org There will be 7 clubs competing, with three sequences each. Judging is by Mr. Ian Bateman. FRPS, MPAGB who besides being an PAGB A.V. Judge is also a well respected International A.V. Judge. Visitors from other clubs are most welcome, and entry is free.

The next round of Print Box Orders will be next month, closing date 28th April. Updated details with confirmed costs will be on the web-site in the next few days.

Finally, although it seems so far ahead, entries for the SPF 2013 Exhibition are now open. Closing date for entries is 31st August, but as there are only 33 club entries available ( already only 30 remaining!) you won't want to leave it too late and miss out. All of the necessary information is on http://www.southernfed.org.uk/exhibition2013.htm , where you will also find a link to the new Rules... be sure to read these!

Eve Arnold HonFRPS had died

The legendary photo-journalist Eve Arnold HonFRPS passed away on 4 January 2012, aged 99 years. The American born Arnold had lived in the United Kingdom since the 1960s and had been recognised with an OBE in 2003 and an Honorary Fellowship of The Society in 1993.

The Southern Photographic Federation Digitally Projected and Print Champtionships 2012

The Southern Photographic Federation Digitally Projected and Print Champtionships 2012 will be held on Sunday 25th March 2012 at the Littleton Millennium Hall, Littleton near Winchester.

The event will be hosted this year by Havant Camera Club and your judges on the day are:

There is only one fee of £20 for a club entry whether you enter Prints, PDIs or both. and the closing date for the receipt of entries is Saturday 3rd of March 2012.

Further information including entry details are on the entry form on www.southernfed.org.uk Unless already prequalified, the two highest placed clubs in each discipline will be invited to represent the Southern Federation at the PAGB Inter-Federation Club Championships at Warwick (PDIs) and Connah's Quay (Prints).

Inter-club competitions are always exciting and well worth attending.

Gene Nocon has died.

Gene Nocon died on 20th November 2011. He was our hero for his invention of the f-stop method of exposure in darkroom printing. There is a very interesting 30 minute video of him talking about how he developed this idea and his work with Cecil Beaton, Norman Parkinson and Tim Rudman. It is a good history of the late 20th century photography. Well worth viewing.

The GB Cup Open, the GB Cup Small Clubs and the GB Cup Nature, which closes for entries on the 9th January 2012, has been previously announced with an entry fee of £12 for each GB Cup entered but it is now FREE! Each participating club receives a CD of all the best images entered, sufficient to happily fill an evening in your programme. These AV shows have been very well received and we have had many favourable comments about both the content and the quality of the production.

With the development and expansion of the SPF web-site (www.southernfed.org.uk)

your Council feels that it is no longer appropriate to continue to publish a separate Newsletter.

However, in order to alert clubs to ongoing new information, we will from time to time e-mail all clubs with a summary of significant issues from the web-site, along with the appropriate links to access the details. We hope you will help this to reach all club members in the SPF, by copying this e-mail to all your members.

So, to kick things off for the new season, here are a few headlines:

1. The SPF Leagues for 2011-12 are now sorted out; for tables and fixture lists and other details see http://www.southernfed.org.uk/league.htm All of the PDI entries for last season have now been added to the web-site in a set of galleries starting at http://www.southernfed.org.uk/leaguegallery1.htm ..well worth a look!

2. The SPF Exhibition in January 2012 will again be held in Salisbury. Entry for prints ( but not PDIs) is now closed. See http://www.southernfed.org.uk/exhibition2011.htm for full details

3. There is an important change in the PAGB standard mileage rate..up to 30p per mile plus fuel cost. See http://www.southernfed.org.uk/data/pagbrates20110426.pdf

4. 5. Finally, I have been asked to bring to your attention a competition organised by The ESRC Centre for Population Change (CPC), based at the Universities of Southampton and St Andrews.

The UN predicts that on the 31st of October 2011 the population of the world will reach 7 billion.
The theme of the competition is:'What Does Living in a World of 7 Billion Mean to You?'

Photo submissions can be anything that in the author’s opinion, answers this. The competition is free to enter. Selected photographs will be displayed in a presentation at the ‘World at 7 Billion’ seminar to be held in London on the 31st October 2011. The closing date is 14th October 2011

PAGB Awards Workshop - 9th October 2011

If you are considering applying for a PAGB Award for Photographic Merit - CPAGB DPAGB or MPAGB - this day is for you !

This will be an all day event at Crawley CC HQ on Sunday October 9th 2011.
First priority will be given to SPA members for whom entry will be free.
Members of other PAGB federations are also invited to apply and, if accepted, there will be a fee of £15 per person.

The workshop will be led by Andy Hanson MPAGB ARPS APAGB FIPF & Daphne Hanson CPAGB APAGB from East Anglia
and Mike Chambers ARPS MPAGB EFIAP BPE 5* who is both a PAGB and an SPA judge.

We will also be sending this information to all SPA Club Reps but please do your best to inform others in your clubs.
